Requirements Specification

Audience

  • Business and Systems Analysts
  • Information Analysts
  • Consultants
  • User Analysts
  • All staff who are required to develop or participate in developing a Specification of Requirements.

Background

Since computers first started to be introduced to help and support business, we have often heard the comments:

“This system doesn’t do what I wanted” ...from the user group

or

“I wish the users would tell us what they wanted” ...from the computer group.

The answer to these questions involves:

  • Effective communication – tools and techniques for effectively communicating and understanding both business and technical requirements
  • A structured process – a process that ensures all appropriate steps are taken and team members understand where they are headed
  • Achievable quality –  determining the level of acceptable quality.
  • A Specification of Requirements document is utilised to accurately define and prioritise all requirements for the new system in a way that captures users desires for the information system so that the I.T. analysts can develop comprehensive and meaningful business system options.
